This is the first place to see this find. Yet another of our rare survivor from the early c. 20th. Solid brass articulated map reading lamp, from an era when lamps were made to last!
This giant of a lamp extends over approximately 1 meter with solid cast parts. The parabolic shade (a pre curser to the later Jielde style lamps of France) screws directly into the cast lamp housing and are designed specifically for this lamp. The beautiful and complex 3 double elbow joints are not just friction fit… they have 4 gears on each one, making up this lamp’s unique character.
These fixtures were born to be useful, brightening medical offices, laboratories, factories and other workspaces across the country and date back to the beginnings of electricity. I love the beautiful, elegant simplicity of its utilitarian engineered design, it’s colour and aged patina, being totally left untouched with just a simple rewire & PAT.
