Cast Iron Lion Door Porter
Date: 19th century (c. 1850)
Dimensions: H: 38.5cm , W:26.5cm Depth 8cm
This form of Lion is called " sejant erect" seated on its haunches, but with its body erect and both forepaws raised in the "rampant" position resting on a coat of arms (this is sometimes termed "sejant-rampant"). The lion is a common charge in heraldry, it traditionally symbolises courage, nobility, royalty, strength, stateliness, and valour, because historically it is regarded as the "king of beasts".
Large and thickly cast suggests it is an early casting as early as the c. 1850's. This King has beautiful detailing to its main face and tail .
Painted at some point, pitting -age and enviromental related general wear and patina. In all a striking piece, stands proud and stately on a console table by a door or in the garden.
