A rare Country House Grand Tour, French Empire, Corinthian column oil lamp for conversion. Constructed in 3 sections of solid Italian Sienna statuary stone marble. With the most exquisite, gilded bronze font and reservoir in the form of a neoclassical gadrooned and fluted urn, underneath is a solid Corinthian capital and base which is also gadrooned in a gilded bronze casting with neoclassical motifs including acanthus leaves.
The tall column locates in a steel frame attached to a circular pedestal with a wide gilt bronze band of neoclassical figures around it depicting the story of Hannibal’s Army.
Ingeniously the pedestal frieze rotates, allowing for the whole scene to be displayed ‘in the round’, usually seen for the viewing of sculpture but never a lamp! The whole sits on a wide square marble base with huge lion’s paw bronze feet. This lamp is a work of art in its own right and is extremely special.
Hannibal, a Carthaginian general and statesman who commanded the forces of Carthage in their battle with the Roman Republic, led his army and a team of elephants across southern Europe and the Alps Mountains against Rome in the Second Punic War.
Hannibal whom Bonaparte greatly admired and their circumstance were not altogether different.
