Cutler’s stool or buffers stool from Sheffield, South Yorkshire, with fantastic colour and patina from years of use. These beautiful stools are unique to the Sheffield cutlery and silver industry and were made by the workers themselves from the late 18th Century onwards, this being an early example.
According to folklore the cutler would use the offcut from their bench and fashion some legs to create their own work stool. stools were often inscribes with initals and marks so to distinguish whose stool it belonged to, as has been found on these stools
Constructed of oak and elm, these stools are surprisingly comfortable and make great seats or due to their size are fantastic as lamp tables or occasional tables. Wonderful pieces of social history and vernacular furniture.
Original condition, with great age, wear and patina.
